Telecoms in Ireland - Review

Damien Mulley on his blog has a 3 part post on the Telecoms industry in Ireland. After hearing Damien on the Last Word on Today FM the other week i actually look up Ireland Offline and i think its an excellent idea and deserves all the support it can get!

I got interested in this today over my morning briefing this morning about the issues in the Energy market and power cuts.

eircom. A better attitude or just a better accent? - Irish Telecoms Review 2006 Part 1

Scum sucking bottom feeders - Irish Telecoms Review 2006 Part 2
Where’s ALTO? Irish Telecoms Review 2006 Part 3

I mostly agree with Damien on the first too parts but I'm not too sure about the role Alternative Operators in the Communications Market (ALTO) is to play. There is 40 companies in the Irish Telecoms Sector and ALTO only has 14 members

-Budget Telecom
-BT Ireland
-Cable & Wireless
-Chorus
-Colt Telecom
-ESB Telecoms
-Magnet Networks
-Meteor
-NTL
-Smart Telecom
-Talk Talk
-Verizon

Most of the companies listed above are MNC's and should have the ability to take on Eircom on their own. Why does it so fall on Ireland Offline, voluntary consumer organisation, to get onto to the telecoms poodle (comreg) to raise issues that are important not only for consumers but the companies as well! come on teleco's get to work!

Update:Damien now has a 4th part to the review The Merlin of Irish Telecoms: ComReg - Irish Telecoms Review 2006 Part 4

  1. I've written 5 parts. Today is on the regulator and tomorrow on the Minister. I am considering one on consumer as well as I think that they are not doing enough.
